Quick Overview:
If you’re looking to avoid all the familiar haunts for your Eastern European stag weekend, the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius could be the perfect option. Situated around 200 miles from the Lithuanian coast, Vilnius is a hidden gem among the Baltic capitals. Known for its quirky and vibrant spirit, the town offers the chance to feel like you’re stepping back in time while still offering all of the modern conveniences. The nightlife, it must be said, is positively pumping, and the Vilnius locals are always up for a decent session of hard partying.
Couple this with some brilliant outdoor activities and you’ve got all the ingredients in place for an unforgettable hen weekend!
In a Nutshell:
- Vilnius has a population of approximately 600,000.
- Old statues of Lenin have been torn down to signify independence from Soviet rule. To celebrate their newfound democracy, the people of Vilnius erected a bronze statue – of all people – late American oddball singer Frank Zappa!
- Close to Vilnius is a site some claim to be the Geographical Centre of Europe.
- The official language is Lithuanian. Russian and English are also widely spoken.
- Typically for Eastern Europe, the cost of food and alcohol is extremely cheap.
- Locals are typically a friendly bunch, happy to help out visitors to their city.
Out on the Town:
Like all former Eastern Block capital cities, the nightlife in Vilnius has exploded over the last few years and new places to party are springing up all the time. The Old Town in Vilnius is the centre of the city’s night scene, featuring a smorgasbord of restaurants, bar, pubs and clubs. A lot of venues manage to roll all of these things into one, making it extremely easy to find spots that conveniently cover all of your needs in the one location. Beer lovers will be well pleased as there are a number of local brews on offer, including some that pack a major punch (9.5% alcoholic content!) Utenos and Kalnapilis are the best local beers, preferable to midus (mead), which can be as much as 60% proof! And please note: A lot of the clubs in town will have a dress policy, so make sure you’re not looking too scrappy before hitting the town!
Daytime Activities:
From quad biking to KGB pistol shooting, Vilnius offers a massive amount of adrenaline charged activities to keep your hen party entertained. The standard hen do crowd pleasers are all on offer here: 4x4 driving, Karting, Clay Pigeon Shooting and pretty much anything else you can think of. If you’re after something a little more unique, Vilnius comes up trumps too: Participate in a full-on military action day; organise for the hen to be kidnapped; take a leap with a daring bungee jump or participate in a tandem parachute drop.
Weather:
Featuring a relatively temperate climate, Vilnius has the best weather in the months of June to August where the average temperature is 22°C. It rarely gets above 4°C between November and March, dropping to below zero in January.
Currency:
The national currency is the Lithuanian Lita (LTL). £1 = 5.049LTL (approximate).
Transport:
The easiest and cheapest way to travel is on buses and trains. The Old Town city centre is very compact though, therefore being very easy to navigate on foot. When travelling by taxi it is advisable to call a reputable taxi company rather than hailing one from the street. Unfortunately some cab drivers are more than happy to rip off tourists, so make sure the meter is on and that you have a rough idea about how much you should be paying.
