Highland Games - Edinburgh

Highland Games

Highland Games:
From White Lightning and the refrigerator to golf, hypodermic needles and gingers, let's face it, the Scots have made some pretty dazzling contributions to the human race. Now is your chance to have a taste of their favourite pastime, the Highland Games.

The games give you an opportunity to try your arm at traditional events that William Wallace himself used to get fit before taking on the might of the English army. Still incredibly popular amongst native Scots, the real Highland Games attract contestants from all over the world who astound huge crowds with their throwing and lifting feats accompanied by the sound of bagpipes.

If you haven't tossed in competition against your mates since private school, grab a caber and launch it far as possible. You may have had a go at the shotput when you were younger but why throw a ball of metal when you can throw a big stone? Have a go at tossing a sheaf (bundle of hay in a bag) over a pitchfork, or the ever-challenging 'weight over a bar' which is pretty self explanatory. Haggis rolling, hurling the wellies and tug o' war are also popular amongst the clansmen and women.

All of the events cater for punters of all shapes and sizes, so you don't have to be built like Geoff Capes to have a brilliant time. Kilts are optional.

Tossing the Caber:
This traditional event sees participants lifting large (well, actually enormous) poles so that they stand perpendicular to their bodies with the sharp end pointing to the sky. The pole is then tossed in the air so that the sharp end ends up pointing into the ground.

Weight Over Bar:
This involves nothing but balance and brute strength and a whole lotta Scottish ‘know how'. Basically you have to swing a weight over your head and over a bar which is behind you and just don't forget to let go!

Catering:
A range of catering options is available on site.

Duration:
2 hours.

Note:
The site can provide waterproof clothing but we recommend that guests bring their own wet weather gear and sturdy footwear that can take a bit of mud.
