Quick Overview:
The Sunniest Place in Great Britain. Sounds perfect for a
stag party.
Eastbourne, in East Sussex, is a quaint seaside resort town with four miles of shingle beach that has been a popular tourist destination since Victorian times. Sheltered behind the high, chalk-white cliffs of Beachy Head,
Eastbourne has one of the best climates in all of Europe. Pubs, nightclubs and restaurants, the beach and other activities like laser tag and go-karting ensure
Eastbourne can satisfy any stag do appetite.
Getting Around:
Cars are king of the road in Eastbourne. It’s the most common form of transportation and the result is frequently clogged roads. A private company provides bus services in and is the best alternative to driving while on a stag do in Eastbourne. Rail service is available from Eastbourne to a number of outlying localities including London Victoria and Brighton. Because of Eastbourne’s location, all of the rail lines serving the coast must pass through. As a result, Hampden Park is thought to be the busiest station in the country.
Must See/Must Do:
• Eastbourne Pier - A 1,000 foot long pleasure pier that was constructed in 1870. Currently, it includes an amusement arcade, various retails shops, a tattoo parlor (permanent
stag party memento anyone?), restaurant, tea room, two bars and a nightclub.
• Action - Several establishments around town offer fun activities like go-Karting, indoor laser tag and mini-golf. Eastbourne is also a debarkation point for scuba diving excursions. Learn to sail, windsurf or kayak at the Spray Water Sports Centre
• Beachy Head - The highest chalk sea cliff in Britain at 530 feet above sea level. Come on the stunning views down the coast. Due to its size, Beachy Head is one of the most notorious suicide locations in the world.
• South Downs - Adjacent to Beachy Head, South Downs is a chalk downland and Britain’s newest national park.
History and Culture:
The area where Eastbourne is located has been settled since the Stone Age. Artifacts from Neolithic times have been found in the nearby South Downs. Very little changed until the 19th century when the area’s four rural hamlets joined together and formed a town. The railroad arrived in 1849 and the town became a resort catering to city visitors drawn to the beach. A number of famous historical figures like authors Lewis Carroll, Charles Dickens and George Orwell and Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton either came from Eastbourne, lived there or attended St. Cyprian’s preparatory school. Devastation wrought during World War II bombing raids have mostly been erased with a series of redevelopment projects that took place beginning in the 1950s and 1960s.
Nightlife:
Eastbourne’s nightlife – a key
stag party interest – may somewhat subdued compared to Britain’s rowdier scenes, but a number of bars, pubs, restaurants and clubs keeps Eastbourne ranked for stag party Weekends. As for nightclubs there is Tjs on Terminus Road. Pevensey and Langney roads are also nightlife centers with several establishments and Atlantis at the Eastbourne Pier is a popular destination for tourists, Stag Dos and locals alike.
Eating:
Any kind of food you could possibly want is found in Eastbourne on a stag party, and that’s an almost literal statement. Culinary fare ranging from traditional British to Continental and seafood is represented along with several pubs with quality grub. But, beyond that, Eastbourne also offers restaurants specializing in Chinese, Thai, Indian, Italian, Spanish, Greek, North American and Mexican. Ole!
