Quick Overview:
The Gateway to North Wales is a fitting spot for a hardcore
stag party. No one parties like the Welsh, and the city of
Chester is a willing host. Located on the river Dee in the northwestern county of Cheshire,
Chester is visually attractive with old world history.
Chester is peppered with a large number of pubs and a handful of worthwhile night clubs so it meets the
stag do prerequisite.
Getting Around:
Chester, and its city centre in particular, is small enough to keep everything within walking distance. During daytime hours, public buses are available on regular routes. Taxi services are also available in the city. For the stag party in Chester with a need for speed, try Northern Ferrari Hire on Deeside Lane - that is if you want to have a go behind the wheel of the world’s finest driving machine.
Must See/Must Do:
• Chester Racecourse - Originally the site of a Roman port, the racecourse now hosts “race days” several times a year. Tickets must be booked in advance
• Open-top Bus Tour - Several operators in town offer these trips by all the main tourist sites in an approximately 30-minute span.
• Historic sites - visit the walls around the city centre that were constructed by Romans. The amphitheatre on Vicars Lane is believed to be the site of the largest wooden amphitheatre built outside of Rome in ancient times. A larger stone structure was later built on top of the original foundation.
• Dewa Roman Experience - An interactive museum that focuses on Chester’s Roman history through hands-on exhibits.
History:
Chester was settled as a Roman fort during Romano-British times when it was called Deva. This makes some parts of Chester about 2,000 years old. The Saxons gave Chester its name some time around the 5th century. Chester was loyal to the crown during the (1640s) English Civil War. King Charles I was said to have witnessed his soldiers in battle from a wall tower. Toward the end of the 18th century, Chester and its large cattle market, railroads and workers played a significant role in the Industrial Revolution. These days, the city is attempting to grow the city’s reputation as a tourist destination and stag do locale.
Nightlife:
Old-fashioned pubs are in no shortage on a stag party in Chester. Most, however, don’t stay open late - good thing there are several nightclubs in the city that stay open until 3 a.m. Branigans and Telford’s Warehouse are popular choices for late night drinks and dancing. Go to the Ye Olde Cottage Inn with your
stag party for real cask ale and a great beer garden. The Watergates Bar, located in a Norman crypt, attracts a lively clientele and has a good selection of music. It also stays open later than most bars - 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturdays – good news for a stag do in Chester.
Eating:
Chester has a variety of restaurants covering a field of culinary choices starting with traditional English. Brasserie 10-16 is a local favorite where reasonable prices are meshed with outstanding food and service. If your stag party in Chester prefers international fare, Piccolino offers quality Italian and Siam has a tasty Thai menu.
