Amsterdam Highland Games

'Och eye the noo me laddie', if you're looking for a fun-packed, traditional activities then look no further than Highland Games. The Scottish version of the Olympic games date back to the reign of King Malcolm III in the 11th Century, and today it's still a great way to reveal your competitive streak to friends and colleagues alike.

Try your arm at the events William Wallace himself trained to take on the English army. Still incredibly popular amongst native Scots, the real Highland Games attract contestants from all over the world who astound huge crowds with throwing and lifting feats accompanied by the sound of bagpipes.

If you haven't tossed in competition against your mates since your schooldays, grab a caber and launch it far as possible.

You may have had a go at the shotput when you were younger but why throw a ball of metal when you can chuck a big stone? Have a go at tossing a sheaf (bundle of hay in a bag) over a pitchfork, or the ever-challenging 'weight over a bar' which is pretty self-explanatory, really. Haggis rolling, hurling the wellies and tug o' war are also popular among clansmen and women.

All of the events cater to men and women of all shapes and sizes, so you don't have to be built like Geoff Capes to have a brilliant time. Kilts optional.
