General
York, located in Yorkshire, maintains an attitude that will make any
stag do proud. In a nutshell, there are two things that define the true native of
York. One is Festival, the other Pub. The town is teeming with awesome Medieval architecture, museums and galleries. At night,
York comes alive with pubs, clubs and bars. As if these things were not enough, York has maintained it’s reputation as one of the most picturesque locations in England. If your stag weekend would like to enjoy a location that has something for everyone, York will suit you fine.
History and Culture of York.
If you were to imagine York as a melting pot of cultures, you would find it to be a deep one. It the pot, you would see the influence of the Celts, Romans, Vikings and Normans. The various influences of all of these cultures make the people of York who they are today. Any
stag do will stand in awe upon seeing the impressive Medieval architecture located throughout York. Great care has been taken to ensure restoration is accurate, and the Modern buildings do not interfere with the treasures of the past. York, the “City of Festivals“, offers many yearly celebrations, highlighting their love of their history, music and ancient dance. Your
stag do will appreciate the strong sense of pride felt by all citizens.
York Transportation:
Your York stag weekend will soon find they are better off to navigate the inner city by foot or bike. Much of York’s city centre is closed to autos during the day. Busses offer day passes for a very reasonable fare. Because of the terrain of the city, walking and biking are the preferred method of inner city travel, allowing your stag do to experience true York beauty. Bike lanes are everywhere, and bicycle rental fees are affordable.
Nightlife
If the guys in your stag party are true “pub lovers”, you need to get your group to the “Mickelgate” district. There, you will be able to experience more pub hospitality than you ever thought possible. “Coney Street” can show you a good time in clubs that are a little more upscale. If you consider your stag party a group of “with it” gentleman, the “Goodramgate” and “Swinegate” areas will be the place for you. Keep in mind that some of the pub areas can be somewhat rowdy, and please remember cabs are available at the end of your night out.
Dining
If your stag party would like to experience some excellent seafood and upscale dishes, the “Fossgate” and “Walmgate” areas are where you need to be. Return to the 1920’s at “Betty’s Tea Room”, a favorite of the locals. There are establishments that have stellar reputations in International cuisine, offering Indian and Mexican dishes. Some of the quieter Wine bars serve food that can be enjoyed while you test some vintages you have always been curious to try.
The Sporting Side
There is one sporting tradition that York citizens truly love. Take your stag do friends to “Yorkshire Track” and enjoy the day-long races. Be prepared for some very enthusiastic locals.
