Oxford, of course, was established in order to create the ultimate in higher education. Needless to say, the effort was extremely successful. Besides the magnificent architecture, your
stag do will find a vast selection of drinking and eating venues to enjoy. Sure,
Oxford is the home to some of the great young minds on earth, but your stag party is just as likely to get into a spirited debate with students concerning the best local ale as Classic English Literature.
Oxford’s Rich History:
The great minds of Hawking,
Tolkein, and many others, can attest to the success of Oxford’s academic past. Established in the 1100’s, this town will impress your stag party with carefully preserved architecture. Students attending the 38 colleges that comprise Oxford University are no different than students anywhere else. As your stag
weekenders will soon see, there is a great variety of things to see and do in Oxford. There are numerous museums and galleries, historical buildings and sites, as well as pubs, clubs and restaurants that will keep your
stag do very busy.
How to Get Around:
There are four methods of transportation in Oxford. There is the bicycle, busses, rail and of course walking. It is always suggested your stag party members explore city centre by foot in order to see what Oxford has to offer in unique shops and local businesses. Your
stag do will have no problem renting bicycles, but protected lanes can be a little difficult to find. Bus service is available out of rail hubs, and 24 hour passes can be purchased at a reasonable cost. Oxford is less than an hour from London, so you stag party will have many places to explore in the surrounding areas.
Nightlife:
As in any University town, the options for nightlife is to some degree established by the students. Your stag do will find Oxford to be no exception. Please take note that some establishments are “student only”, so please check ahead to make sure access is not restricted. Hopefully, the guys in your stag party enjoy dancing. A good percentage of the venues have dance floors with either live or DJ music. Two very popular places are “The Bridge” and “Lava & Ignite”. If you prefer a somewhat quieter evening, there are many pubs and small bars located in virtually every part of Oxford. If you choose to sample some great wines, be sure to visit one of the fantastic wine bars.
Oxford Foods:
Have you ever eaten in an establishment that is over 750 years old? If not, you owe it to your Oxford stag party to visit a place called “The
Mitre”. There you will experience some fantastic pub food that is a local favorite. Many of the locations in Oxford are student favorites, so you will find selections geared to the student taste. However, the area contains some very old and historic family breweries serving some great food. Venturing to nearby “Great Milton” will afford you the chance to experience some finer dining.
The Sporting Side:
If your stag do were to try to think of the oldest sports rivalry in history, their response would most certainly be Oxford and Cambridge. The intense competitive attitude is shown in many sports. Rugby matches, for example, are held regularly, each team attempting to show the other their natural superiority. It should be noted the competitions usually includes the quantity of beer consumed by each.
