Overview:
Will man ever be able to fly like a bird? Well no, of course not. We lack the fundamental physical attributes that would give us the ability to take flight. However you can experience the nearest thing to flying by strapping yourself to a paraglider, jumping off the side of a mountain and speeding through the through the air. An incredible experience, and definitely not for the faint-hearted.
If you don't know what the difference is between a paraglider and a parachute read on: Paragliding canopies consist of a row of cells, most of them open at the front and all of them closed at the back.
Moving through the air keeps them inflated as air enters in the front but can't get out the back. The cells form an aerofoil shape to produce lift, just like an aeroplane wing, so instead of just dropping slowly towards the earth you can control the direction of your flight and speed of descent. Clever stuff.
You'll catch the ski lift up to the take-off point at Brevent, 2000m above ground level. Obviously you won't be flying solo, so you'll be paired up with a qualified paragliding pilot who'll give you a full briefing before strapping you both into the paraglider. You'll take a running jump and launch yourselves off the side of the mountain and glide down into picturesque Chamonix.
The pilot is in full control of the glider so all you have to do is relax and enjoy the ride. The descent is in excess of 1000m and the views of the Alps are absolutely stunning, so don't forget your camera.
