Overview:
You may think the only exercise the Scottish get is running to the chippy to get to the front of the queue for the battered Mars bars, but you'd be wrong. The Highland Games (the Scottish Olympics) are incredibly popular north of the border and
William Wallace himself practiced many of the physical disciplines to get fit before taking on the might of the English army.
Your group will be decked out in kilts and divided into two competing clans. If you've got a mate built like Geoff Capes, get him into your clan as the more the musclepower the better.
Under the guidance of a professional highland games instructor you'll take each other on at six of the following nine games:
Putting the stone:
Like shot putting, but using a stone instead of a ball of lead.
Caber toss:
If you haven't tossed in competition against your mates since private school, grab a caber (a huge wooden pole) and launch it far as possible.
Throwing the hammer:
You may have thrown a hammer before, but this hammer is an Olympic-spec weight on a chain, not a claw hammer from B&Q and the throwing takes place under strict controlled conditions, not during a riot after a Millwall match.
Tug o' war:
If you don't know what this is, you've probably never heard of Scotland.
Weight for height:
Think high jump, but instead of launching yourself over a bar, you launch a huge weight. Attempt to break the world record of 150 meters.
Chain throw:
Several weights are connected to a chain which you have to lob as far as your feeble arms can manage.
The Farmer's walk:
Each clan member carries several heavy items- cabers and weights etc- through a set track of hay stacks in a race against the other clan.
Roll the barrel:
Roll out the barrel, you'll have a barrel of fun. Each clan has to roll a heavy barrel over a challenging track. Fight as a group to keep to keep the barrel under control and make sure you don't get in its way otherwise you'll end up flatter than a Dutch pancake.
The caber wave:
Negotiate a tough track carrying a huge caber in team competition.
