Overview:
If there is one thing near and dear to the city of York, it is drinking and celebration. That means the city is tailor-made for your stag weekend! You will find many sights and pastimes to occupy you during the day, and all the party you can handle at night. The Shambles and the Minster are extremely popular attractions in York. While the city is also famous for playing host to many hen parties, you will find it the perfect site for your stag party as well if you know where to look. If history and architecture are your thing, you will also fall in love with York where a dizzying blend of beautiful architecture and awe-inspiring historical sites dotted the city.
Getting Around:
The streets in York were originally built for pedestrians and horse-carts so you will find travel by car rather challenging. In fact, cars are not allowed in a significant portion of the older parts of the city during the day. Your best bet will be either to walk or to take the bus. Bus passes for a full day are a very affordable option. Biking is also an extremely popular option; with very few hills and quite a few bicycle lanes (although you will want to be careful you do not accidentally ride your bike into an area of the city designated for pedestrians only).
Must See/Must Do:
• If you want to pass some of your time in sightseeing, make sure you do not forget a visit to the York Minster, a huge old Gothic cathedral
• For some creepier fun, a River Ouse Ghost Cruise or a walk through the York Dungeon fit the bill perfectly
• Taking your time walking through The Shambles and taking in the shops and pubs!
History and Culture:
Originally a Celtic city that was conquered and turned into a fort by the Roman Conquerers, York was destroyed during the invasion of William the Conqueror, after which the city was gradually rebuilt. York was classified as a conservation area in 1968 in recognition of the city's historical significance. It is known for its many very popular festivals, including festivals celebrating different types of dance, music and drink -- all great options around which to build your stag weekend in York!
Nightlife
There is one thing about which you can be certain for your stag do in York - you are never going to run out of pubs and bars to try out! Several different districts serve to organise these hotspots into different types; from the Coney St. area with its fine, upscale establishments to the Mickelgate area with its younger, slightly wilder scene and other areas such as Swinegate and Goodramgate with both new and old-fashioned spots. Whatever it is, you will never encounter any problems in seeking out an ideal nightspot in York to suit your wallet size!
Eating & Drinking
Much like York's bars and pubs, York's restaurants can be found in a variety of districts around the city. The finest establishments can be found in the Fossgate or Walmgate regions - J Bakers Bistro Moderne and Harveilles are two extremely high-quality choices. The Fiesta Mehicana is a terrific Mexican restaurant with the capacity for large parties. Depending on the experience you wish to create for your York stag weekend, any of these options or the many others available in York can work perfectly.
Sport:
Of all the sporting events that take place in and around York, the horse racing track is probably the most popular. If you build your York stag do around a race, be careful that you plan ahead and make your reservations very early - you will definitely not be the only person looking for room! But, as long as you get those reservations made in time, your stag party in York is certain to be an incredible experience no matter when you hold it!
