Overview:
Situated in South East England, the city of Oxford has the reputation for incredible academia, due in large part to the famous Oxford University. But there is far more to the city than study! An incredible amount of rich history and beautiful old architecture provide an amazing backdrop for a very unique stag weekend in Oxford. The quiet surface of Oxford certainly hides a surprising number of entertainment choices for day and night. Ready to explore? Go Oxford for your stag weekend!
Getting around:
You can reach Oxford in 50 to 60 minutes from London, making it an easy location for the day trippers. You will want to avoid driving once you reach the city though. The narrow old streets definitely lend themselves much better to walking then driving. Bicycling, also, is very popular in Oxford, although you will probably find yourself dodging pedestrians due to the lack of bike lanes. You can ride the train around the city if you wish (they won't charge you an extra to bring a bicycle on board with you) and you can catch a bus at the train stations as well. Unlimited 24-hour bus passes are a very affordable and convenient option for your Oxford stag weekend.
Must see/ Must do:
• Tour Oxford University and breathe in the academic air
• Rather than exploring Oxford on your own, you may wish to take a guided walking tour of the city
• Go shopping at the famous Covered Market, or at the gift shop at Oxford University
• Make sure to grab some ice cream from Oxford institution G&D's
• Take a boat down the River Cherwell
History and Culture:
Oxford, the city, seems sometimes to be almost synonymous with Oxford, the university. You simply can’t say them in two different breaths! It is, after all, one of the oldest, most famous and most prestigious universities in the world and that is a fact in which the city takes great pride. Oxford stag weekends may frequently tend to be somewhat quieter affairs than one might find in more obviously wild hotspots. But, keep one thing in mind - where there is a college town, there are students. And where there are students, there is terrific nightlife. You just have to know where to look!
Nightlife:
It is these students, both from Oxford University and from Oxford Brookes University, who are responsible for the vast majority of Oxford's nightlife. Some locations, in fact, are open only to students. But, don't worry -- you still have plenty of terrific options for your Oxford stag do. Quant old pubs are easy to find, or for a more exciting evening check out such hotspots as Ignite or the Bridge and Lava. If you are looking for the company of youthful revellers to spice up your stag party, the nightspots in Oxford will not disappoint you!
Eating & Drinking:
You will be happy to hear, when planning a stag party in Oxford, that there are plenty of locations to be found in Oxford that serve delicious bar food and high quality drink. The Mitre, in existence for 750 years, is one of the most popular, as is the Hook Norton Brewery. If you are looking for a trendier, more high-end location, Le Manoir au Quat'Saisons provides an incomparable experience. Oxford’s gastronomy is certainly guaranteed to meet all sizes of wallets!
Sport:
If you want to be in town when the normally staid and reserved city of Oxford really comes out of its shell, then you should definitely schedule your stag do for one of the matches between Oxford and Cambridge (no, the sport really does not matter, although rugby is always a popular choice). Hold on to your hats and settle in for an experience you will never forget - as long as you can remember it the next morning!
