York hen parties

The Romans and Vikings certainly saw something enticing about York and to this day it's a magnificent and beautiful city. York is cut in two by the River Ouse (nasty name, great place for a cruise!) with the east side boasting fantastic shops for the ladies, while boozers for the lads are concentrated in the Micklegate district. Away from the city and out in the fantastic Yorkshire Dales, there are superb activity centres where you can experience watersports and motor and field activities before returning to the city for a top night out.

Overview
A city located at the confluence of River Ouse and River Foss, York presents numerous opportunities for making your hen weekend an enriching and memorable one. A hen do in York would be incomplete without partaking of the pub touring culture of the locals. It’s also the location for numerous fun filled festivals. Aside these, a hen weekend in York will also give you the opportunity to see several eye popping historic buildings that represent part of the English history.

Getting Around
York was designed to support equestrian drawn carts and as such, the city doesn’t really support movement in automobiles. You’d fare better by leaving your car and slogging it out on foot considering the fact that most of the fun places in the old city are inaccessible to cars until night time. Apart from walking, another way of getting around is by boarding a bus with your hen party crew; a day’s bus pass is under £4. If you love cycling, then you’d be at home in York as this is the best method of moving around the city due to the extensive and well laid out bike lanes. However, you should avoid areas designated for pedestrians only or you’ll end up getting fined.

Must See/Must Do
• Take a walk down The Shambles with your crew to enjoy the quaint and striking scenery which has served as inspiration for several writers.
• A visit to the second largest medieval cathedral in the North of Europe, the York Minster.
• Clifford’s Tower, an important building in the history of the city which served as refuge for the Jews in the city during the anti-Semitism period.
• Pay homage to the shrine of “the pearl of York”, Margaret Clitherow, located on The Shambles.
• The National Railway Museum which houses the largest collection of locomotives in the world including several famous ones like the LNER 4468 Mallard.

History and Culture
York is a walled city whose walls were built when it was controlled by Romans who founded it in 71 AD. The city went through numerous upheavals and was even abandoned at some point due to flooding by the Rivers Ouse and Foss. It later became the site for a booming wool industry and was at some point the religious capital of the Church of England in Northern England and the province is still relevant till date. Several festivals including Beer and Cider, Festival of Food and Drink and a host of others guarantee maximum enjoyment during a York Hen Weekend.

Shopping
Shopaholics on a hen weekend in York will not be disappointed due to the numerous stores, boutiques and shops that display an eclectic array of wares. The Shambles serves as home to many of these outlets including Priestley’s and One Ethical. Antique enthusiasts will be delighted by the items at Foss Gate while Walm Gate provides several gifts and souvenirs.

Nightlife
The city is known for the large number of pubs found all over the place. Your hen weekend crew will definitely not have any difficulty locating one of these pubs. You can head over to any of the numerous bars in the Mickle Gate sector of the city if you are in a party mood. For classier gigs, Swine Gate and Coney Street provide ample entertainment.

Eating & Drinking
For traditional wining and dining, Betty’s Tea Café provides excellent choices—but you might have to join a queue! For Mexican cuisine, Fiesta Mexicana is the place to visit, plus it has a party atmosphere. Harveilles provides classier dining with the array of seafood and champagne. All in all, you won’t regret your hen party in York!
