During the Roman era Chester was known as Deva Victrix. The Romans wanted it to be the capital of England. At that time Deva Victrix was biggest Roman fortress in all of Britannia. The amphitheater, city walls, and even a shrine honoring the ancient goddess Minerva can be found. After the 4th Century the Saxons lived in the city until the Norman Conquest.
