Overview:
Canterbury is a medieval city with a history as old as the existence of Christianity in England.
Canterbury is the seat of the Church of England, but gone are the pilgrims made famous by Chaucer. They have been replaced by visitors intent on exploring
Canterbury’s architecture and famous buildings or museums. But don’t fret if your
hen party has shopping, dining, and entertainment on the mind, Canterbury is the perfect mix of city, country and riverside village.
Getting Around:
Transportation options are many on a Hen Weekend in Canterbury. Bikes are a favorite mode of transport and rentals can be found all over the city. The centre is a great place to explore on foot and much is within easy walking distance. Private taxi service is also abundant with an added bonus. Fares are council regulated so all taxis in Canterbury should charge the same when taking your
hen party to the next activity.
Must See/Must Do:
• Canterbury Cathedral – Canterbury’s skyline is dominated by the cathedral – the oldest in England.
• Stour River tour – Your
hen party can escape the hustle and bustle of the busy town with a boat excursion on the Stour that flows through the center of historic Canterbury.
• Wine tasting at Barnsole Vineyard – Is there an activity more tailor-made for a hen do than a wine tasting?
• St. Martin’s Church – The oldest parish church in Britain still in regular use.
• Canterbury Tales – Your hen party will love stepping back in time to the medieval age at this stunning recreation of Chaucer’s characters as they pilgrimage from London to Canterbury.
History and Culture:
Canterbury’s existence dates to before the written record and includes Roman influences even before the city came to prominence in the 6th century. Canterbury has been home to Christianity in Britain. Noted playwright of the Shakespearean era, Christopher Marlowe, was a Canterbury native and the city continues to honor him with a vibrant theatre community.
Shopping:
In addition to its religious significance, Canterbury is a cosmopolitan city fit to satisfy any hen party weekend. Shopping is abundant and includes a wide variety of retail choices. The King’s Mile is located amongst historic buildings next to the cathedral and should not be missed. Harbour Street has a more bohemian flavor and boasts art galleries and gift shops.
Nightlife:
A Hen Party in Canterbury is rife with nightlife. Much of the city’s offerings are localized so they are easy to get to by walking. Pubs abound throughout the city. The Parrot on Church Lane is one of the oldest pubs in England along with The Old Butter Market. If your hen party desires a young professional crowd for cocktails, try the Loft on St. Margaret’s Street.
Eating & Drinking:
Canterbury’s dining options are varied from bargain eats to upscale fine dining. With so much variety, a hen do can’t go wrong. There are also a number of traditional tea rooms for lighter fare. Tiny Tim’s is one of Canterbury’s most well-regarded tea rooms and should be visited. Old Weavers is a great option for English and Italian cuisine where a hen party can dine on the patio as boats pass on the Stour. The Goods Shed is a prime location for fresh organic meals.
