Valencia Tomatina Reservation
Overview:
La Tomatina is one of the largest food fights in the world. Streets are lined with piles and piles of over-ripe tomatoes. The quiet town of Bunol is about to be splattered red. As with most spanish festivals, the start is signified by the lighting of a rocket - except this time, there are five rockets, packed full of tomatoes.
It's not what you'd call a centuries-old festival - it's origins come from 1944, when a group of young men wanted to take part in the 'Gigantes y Cabezudos' parade, and staged a fight, throwing produce from a local vegetable stand - after being arrested and forced to pay for it - they did the same the next year - but brought their own tomatoes - and thus the tradition was born, 'unofficially'.
The festival starts with the 'Palo Jabon' at about 10am - in which someone from the village has to climb a greased pole to reach a ham on top - while the revellers below sing and dance , being sprayed with hoses. Once the ham has fallen, at about 11am, the rockets fly to signal the beginning of the fight. This lasts an hour, (with every tomato being squashed before being thrown to prevent injury) - once this is over, fire trucks begin to hose down the streets and participants, leaving the rivers of tomato juice to wash through the town, leaving the cobbled streets in pristine condition.
We'll transfer you from Valencia to Bunol for the beginning of the festival, with a tour guide to help the proceedings run smoothly. Get yer veg out, and lob 'em at the nearest spaniard you can find - just don't go wearing your sunday best - take an outfit that you're prepared to bin once you're done!
After the festival, you'll head back to Valencia to your hotel to get ready for a big night out. Just remember to wear something nice in the evening - spanish chicas don't really get turned on by the smell of stale tomatoes.
Included:
- La Tomatina festival reservation
- Return transfer from accommodation to Bunol for event.
- Club entry
