Sofia hen nights

This little Eastern Bloc city rocks. A compact city with a cacophony of architectural styles, rich in history, culture and tradition. Despite being on economically shaky ground with high unemployment and many hardships, the inhabitants of Sofia are renowned for being some of the most ‘upferit' nocturnal party starters in the whole of Europe. Bulgarian cuisine is hearty, tasty and has ‘hangover cure' written all over it, with rich cheeses, dumplings, stews and salads as far as the eye can see. Bulgarian wine and spirits are some of the finest and most affordable around, look out for Melnik reds from the South West and a seriously potent plum-based spirit called Rakia, buy a bottle - or ten - and if you can't hack it then use it as a cheap alternative to paint stripper.

It wasn't quite what I expected.

Sofia wasn't quite what we expected in that it was a lot poorer than we thought. We were expecting it to be like Prague but it seemed more run down and not quite as safe. However for the most part the locals were friendly and tolerant and your money goes an awfully long way out there, especially your beer money. What would have been good though, perhaps as part of the itinery would have been suggestions for good local restaurants that are easy to find. Our guide did help with this a little, but she wasn't always with us until later in the evening and not when we were scouting out places to eat, but this is a minor thing really as half the fun is often in the exploring. If your stag do is a large one though (15+ people) it might be good to offer this as an option on the itinery so the best man can try and get reservations in prior to arrival.

Sofia is unlike most cities I have visited before. It certainly has a distinctive style and character. I found the architecture on the various churches, mosques and synagogues really interesting, and everything looked really spectacular in the snow.

I thought Sofia was a good location, wasn't too sure what to expect from this destination at first. Really enjoyed the weekend here, the people were friendly and the night life was very good. Really enjoyed the food at the traditional Bulgarian restaurant we went to on Saturday. The price of food and drink also astounded me as it was so cheap!

Sofia is a great place for a stag. Well priced with loads to do! !! Also, if you are going in Jan bring some warm clothes otherwise you may come back with pneumonia......
In Bulgaria the food is rich and so is the wine, if the bride to be is struggling to fit into her dress this may not be the best place to go. If you want to let yourselves go on your hen night though then Sofia might be the place to do it.

As many central European cities start to get more expensive Sofia is the next big place, you’ll find on your Sofia Hen Do that the locals already knew how to have a good time though and are just glad to have some more people to join them.

Food & Drink:
The food is filling so a main meal at lunchtime may be a good idea to avoid weighing yourselves down before the night starts, dishes include plenty of cheese, cream and dumplings: huge quantities of dumplings.

As for drinks Bulgaria makes some of Europe’s best wines especially reds, they are also so cheap that it almost doesn’t make sense to drink anything else but the local beer isn’t bad and there’s plenty of cocktail bars around as well as all the international brands of spirits you would usually expect to see in bars and clubs.

Rakia is a strong plum based spirit if you like it great as its very cheap and could make your money go a lot further than buying imported spirits.

What to do during the day:
Sofia has some great buildings, surrounded by communist era concrete blocks of flats. The gold domed Cathedral of St Alexander Nevsky should be top of your hen party’s agenda and there are a few roman remains as well including the Roman Baths. Much of Sofia does look better by night though so spend some time at cafes along Vitosha Boulevard easing yourselves into a nights drinking before your Sofia Hen Party gets really underway.

What to do at Night:
Everywhere sells drinks, without a need for a license cafes, shops and bars all sell it at whatever time they like. Bulgarians therefore have never it seems understood any reason why you would stop drinking at the weekend and often drink straight through and for your hen weekend in Sofia maybe you should too to make the most of it.

Many of the bars are outdoors, the temperatures in the summer reach 35 degrees Celsius. Vitosha is a great place for your hen night to at least start your night, there are plenty of bars many with dance floors so go between a few checking out the music the drinks and the guys Schweik has more than fifty beers so is likely to attract the guys more than girls maybe they are the ones missing out though. Heading towards the area around Sofia University is likely to be another great place to find yourselves if you are looking for a young crowd. About midnight the bars empty and the clubs fill, by the university you will find Dali a Latin club, for upmarket Techno try Spartakus. Escape and Cream are two more Techno clubs which seems to be the most popular music here. Backstage is where you will want to head if your hen party would prefer some live music though.
