Quick Overview:
Bratislava, the capital city of the small eastern European country of Slovakia, is rapidly becoming a popular destination for hen parties looking for a brilliant trip away. A historic and picturesque city that deftly blends old world charm and modern restaurants, bars and nightclubs, Bratislava is a top option for those after a unique and extremely reasonably priced Hen weekend.
In a Nutshell:
- Is Slovakia’s biggest city with a population of 450, 000.
- Bratislava sits on the river Danube and borders with Hungary and Austria.
- Approximately 60km (45 minutes by train) from Vienna.
- The city is the most densely populated in Central Europe.
- Is very cheap – e.g. beer costs around 50p and a hearty meal is about £5.
Drinking Scene:
The Old Town is jam packed full of pubs, hip bars and pumping nightclubs. You will find a large variety of cheap drinking venues wherever you go - be sure to try some local Slovak beers such as Zlaty Bazant or Kelt. But be warned: if you try downing too much of the pungent local spirit Borovicka you may find yourself waking up somewhere other than you had planned!
Daytime Activities:
From bobsledding to bridge swinging, Bratislava offers a massive amount of adrenaline charged activities to keep your hen party entertained. The standard Hen do crowd pleasers are all on offer here: 4x4 driving, Karting, Paintball, Clay Pigeon Shooting and pretty much anything else you can think of. If you’re after something a little more unique, Bratislava comes up trumps too: Experience the Aerotrim Astro Trainer which has been built to simulate the weightlessness of floating in space; attack the roads in a rugged Armoured Car; fire some powerful machine guns at a target range or get involved in a competitive game of Ice Hockey. If you’re after something a little more laid back, you can’t go past a Brewery Tour that includes, of course, drinking copious amounts of booze.
Weather:
Bratislava enjoys four seasons of weather, with cold winters and hot summers. Winters are quite cold, with snow and ice. Summers are hot, sunny and sometimes humid. The temperatures are usually about 30 °C in the summer.
Currency:
The official currency in Slovakia is the Slovak Crown ("koruna"). The exchange rate is presently about 60 SKK to 1 pound. You can easily change money in hotels, banks, foreign exchange offices and ATMs, but the exchange rates may vary. We recommend using banks, which generally offer the best deals.
Transport:
Bratislava's city centre is very compact and you can get everywhere on foot. You can also catch public transportation almost everywhere - schedules are easily understandable and written in minute intervals. All taxis have several rates which vary depending on if they are ordered by phone (the lowest) or hailed on the street or taxi stand. We strongly recommend that you insist using the meter and make sure that the correct rate is being charged.
