Sword Fighting

Overview:
En guard! The noble art of duelling has been illegal in Britain since 1843, but sword fighting is as popular as ever and now you and your colleagues can learn how. If your team are a competitive bunch who'd love the excitement of a sword fight, this is the place to learn.

So whether you are just looking for a fun experience or for transferable business skills such as focus, beating your competition and hitting targets this enjoyable activity will challenge both body and mind with numerous outcomes.

The tutors are all experienced international fencers, some former Olympians, so you'll be learning from the best. If you've had a disagreement with your boss, don't thrash things out in the board room, settle it with a duel!

Format:
You'll be kitted out in a protective mask and chest guard and equipped with a sword. The plastic swords are specially made and feature a sensor on the tip which lets off a high pitch squeal if it touches anything, so there'll be no arguments about whether you have been hit or not. Unfortunately we can't let novices loose with metal swords, but the replicas are just like the real thing and there's far less chance of someone accidentally losing an eye!

The session will start with a warm up so everyone can get loose and ready for action. The tutors will then give you a safety briefing before teaching you basic defensive and attacking techniques. Fencing is a highly strategic sport and the key is timing your attacks and catching your opponent off guard. The reckless swordsman will inevitably lose, so concentration is key.

You'll then be spilt into smaller groups with instructors who'll work with you in pairs honing your fencing techniques and passing on tips from their wealth of experience. Once everyone's swordsmanship is up to scratch you'll take part in a series of strategy games where your communication and teamwork skills will be tested. Can you guard your boss from sword-wielding attackers? Can you fight your way into enemy territory and rescue a precious item without being hit? You'll find out.

To conclude the event, two of the instructors will have a demonstration duel so you can witness the speed and skill of the experts up close.

An extra challenge that can be incorporated into the event is ‘The battle of the flag', which sees two opposing legions using their newly acquired ensign skills to defeat their opposition. They get just enough time to talk tactics when the lines are drawn and teams go in to battle with the objective of attaining their opponents colours, returning to their territory to claim victory. The ultimate winner is the team with the most flags.
