Dragon Boat Racing

Dragon Boat Racing in London

Overview:
Dragon Boat Racing is an ancient Chinese tradition with over 2000 years of history. This activity can become an extremely competitive and is highly enjoyable; now one of Britain's fastest growing corporate events.

A Dragon Boat is a thirty or forty foot canoe-like vessel with an ornately carved dragon's head and tail, a steerer in the stern keeping the boat on course, a drummer beating time and up to 11 people (30' boats) or 19 people (40' boats) sitting in next to each other ready to paddle.

Corporate dragon boat events are an exciting way of motivating and integrating staff from all areas of the company. Part of the sport's amazing appeal is its ability to get everyone working together in a very short space of time giving a real and lasting sense of individual achievement and team spirit.

A colourful, dynamic and exciting event, full of spectacle and pageantry but above all else, is great fun!

Format:
• The group split into teams, numbers are based on the size of the vessels used. Teams choose a name, in the past teams have dressed to a theme, popular themes include pirates, vicars, favourite Chinese dishes, Vikings, 118 118 and nurses.
• Teams are given a full safety briefing and are instructed on how to operate a dragon boat safety.
• Teams get into boats, and they paddle down the right hand side of the dock and given instruction by the helm on how to use their paddles to make the boat stop, steady, and are given advice on how to set off quickly and maintain the speed.
• Once at the top of the dock the teams are lined up to begin the race.
• The race is 250 metres long and should take in the region of a minute and a half to complete, but this gets quicker as the teams get used to racing.
• Normally there are between 2 to 3 races per team (depending on numbers, light and amount of time), the fastest teams go through to the final. Where you find out who is the Ultimate Dragon Boat Racing team in the office.
