Sunderland locals are known as Mackems. You're probably best off not referring to them as Geordies as you're likely to elicit a response pretty similar to if you had questioned their mothers' sexual practices.

Accents are not the only thing Mackems and Geordies share though. The nightlife in Sunderland is hectic and frantic as in Newcastle, although with quite a lot less out-of-towners. This can be a good thing, though, as the local bars, clubs and locals tend to be less stag-weary. Hotels also tend to be more readily available and are more reasonably priced.

Sunderland also benefits from being able to share the activity centres that have been fuelled by the booming stag business in Newcastle, so there are excellent karting, paintballing, quadding and shooting centres nearby.
