Quick Overview:
Striking to the eye and reasonably easy on the wallet, St. Petersburg is heating up (ok, maybe not literally) to be one of the most popular stag weekend destinations in Eastern Europe. The city's Old Town, which is world heritage listed, is a truly exceptional area that will give you a real taste of St Petersburg's history and style. If you're after a memorable and unique experience, you can't go past St Petersburg's 'White Nights' festival during the Summer months - this is a period of time when the sun shines 24 hours a day, causing havoc for drinkers who measure their boozing time with the rising and falling of the sun!
In a Nutshell:
- The city features a number of brilliant tourist attractions including State Heritage Museum, the Mariinsky Theater, the Imperial Palace and park ensemble at Peterhof.
- The city has gone through a number of name changes: St. Petersburg to Petrograd; Petrograd to Leningrad and then back to St. Petersburg.
- The city is named in honour of St. Peter and not Peter the Great, the actual founder of the city.
- At 300 years old, St. Petersburg is young by European standards.
- The population is well over 4 million.
- The city is located in the delta of the Neva River on numerous islands, a fact which prompted some observers to call it "The City on 101 Islands".
Out on the Town:
The best way to describe the nightlife in St. Petersburg is with one word: wild. This is a city that knows how to party, and visiting stag parties will find themselves celebrating with the locals in no time. St. Petersburg is a city that never seems to sleep, and the range of pubs, clubs and bars in the city will not leave visitors short of options. So bring your cash, leave your preconceptions at the door and prepare yourself for the distinct possibility of things getting wild!
Daytime Activities:
Whether you're after high-charged action or some chill out time (or both), your needs are well taken care of for your stag weekend in St. Petersburg. Kick back in a Russian-style sauna, engage in some Soviet military shooting, even fly in a fighter jet - the range of exciting options are endless.
Weather:
Like the rest of Russia, St Petersburg gets cold in the winter - damn cold. January temperatures average -8°C and an exceptionally cold day will get as low as -15°C. The city cops a chilly wind during this time from the Gulf of Finland, but it all adds to the 'winter wonderland' vibe of the place. Summer can take a while to heat up and it is known to snow as late as April. The temperature gets up to about 20°C between June and August and the town gets most of its visitors during this period.
Currency:
The national currency is the Rouble (RUB). £1 = 50 RUB (approx.)
Transport:
St. Petersburg has a reliable metro bus and train system, making it relatively easy to get around town. Taxis in St. Petersburg are relatively cheap, but you're advised to find out the approximate price for your trip beforehand or make sure that the taxi meter is running - as with most places, there are always a few taxi drivers who are more than happy to rip tourists off.
